Since 2007, the Zabalketa Association has been pursuing an educational strategy called “Zabaldu Mundura”, which in Basque means “opening up to the world”, and involves linking the work we do within the fields of International Cooperation and Education for Social Transformation.
Besides improving the situation in developing countries, this strategy ensures that our projects in Cooperation for Development also constitute tools of awareness and education in the developed world.
To do so, we have incorporated sundry educational projects into the different levels of mainstream education, one of which is currently being undertaken within Higher Education at occupational training centres (Formación Profesional - FP) and at university colleges and faculties.
Our work within this ambit of education involves two methodologies: the “Case Method” and a challenge-based peer learning method called ETHAZI, which is sponsored by the Basque Government’s Department for Occupational Training.
In addition to these methods, Zabalketa also applies the tools used within the sphere of cooperation for development, which include the following: the Problem Tree, the Objectives Tree, and the Environmental and Gender Risk Matrices.
Zabalketa has thus far drafted six educational projects to be applied as practical cases or challenges. Three of them are located in Peru, while the other three are in Bolivia, and they contain a series of resources consisting of teaching units, videos, activity sheets, maps, and photos, which are available in Basque, Spanish and English, and there is even one in Quechua, designed to boost the use of local and minority languages.
These six educational projects are posted on the Zabalketa website, with free and open access according to Creative Commons BY-NC (free non-commercial distribution, crediting the source through attribution). The “Credits” tab provides Zabalketa’s contact details.
