The world ranking

We are going to study and learn more about all aspects of poverty. We are going to discover the inequality there is in the world and how we can come across situations of need and hardship anywhere in the world, even in the Basque Country.

Write down in your notebook what the word POVERTY means to you.

Now read the following information.

1. Each year, the United Nations Development Programme draws up a list that ranks all the countries in the world according to three indices:
2. 1- The average number of years you are expected to live
3. 2- Your average years of schooling
4. 3- The average amount of money you earn each year
5. The final score is called the Human Development Index, HDI, and its value ranges between 0 and 1. The closer a country is to 1, the better its score.
